Sophie Shamanidi

Sophie Shamanidi is the Director of the Minorities Center at the Georgian Strategic Analysis Center.

Sophie Shamanidi was born in 1970 in Tbilisi. In 1992, she graduated from Tbilisi State University, defended her first dissertation (Ph.D) in 1996, and her second dissertation(Habilitation) in 1999. She was awarded the academic degree – Doctor of Philology. She is a professor at Tbilisi State University, Dean of the Department of Modern Greek Philology, Deputy Head of the Institute of Classical Philology, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. In 2014-2018 she was the advisor to the Fourth President of Georgia on minority issues. Sophie Shamanidi was awarded “Alexandros Onassis Foundation” scholarship and the scholarship of the President of Georgia two-times each. She has conducted lectures at various European universities. In 2003 and 2009 she was a visiting professor at the University of Cyprus. Shamanidi is an author of several monographs and 6 textbooks in Greek, the editor of the Greek-Georgian dictionary and the series “Modern Greek Library”.
